Over the Dunes to the Beach

Categories: ,

With its volcanic origins, Iceland boasts many black sand beaches formed from the erosion of basalt and lava rocks. The most famous of these is Reynisfjara, near the village of Vík í Mýrdal. Here, the inky black sands stretch for miles, contrasting dramatically with the crashing white waves of the North Atlantic. Towering basalt sea stacks and rock formations add to the otherworldly landscape. These unique black sand beaches are both hauntingly beautiful and a geological wonder.
