Downy Woodpecker: The downy woodpecker (Picoides pubescens) is a small woodpecker with a black-and-white checkered pattern on its back. Males have a red patch on the back of their heads, while females lack this marking. These birds are found in woodlands, parks, and suburban areas, where they forage for insects by pecking into tree bark. Their call is a high-pitched “pik” sound.
